Sat Feb 24 Workshop
Color Theory – Making It Simple with Stacey Pilkington Smith

Time:  10:00 AM to 3:00 PM 

Cost:  SASi Members $35, Non-members $40
Materials:  All Supplies Included - (students may bring their own mixed media sketchbook.)
Student Skill Level: intermediate, advanced or combination (students should have a working knowledge of primary, secondary, tertiary colors and how to mix them before enrolling in class)
Lunch: Bring your own
Class Description: In this class, Stacey will dive deeper into color theory and explain terms like hue, intensity, saturation, value, tints, color relativity, harmony, brightness, and tones. She’ll take you through three simple step-by-step processes of choosing and making a color palette using color harmony and inspiration.  After students have a good working foundation of colors, Stacey will explain color theory behind skin tones and how to successfully mix a variety of skin tones from fair to the darkest. All activities will be taught using watercolor. Each student will receive a workbook and no supplies are needed, however a mixed media sketchbook will be beneficial to the student.

Watercolor Workshop with Dwight Rose
Two full days 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM

Cost: SASi members $120, Non-members $135

Ages: 15 and older

Students are responsible for bringing supplies.  See Supply List below to print out.

Student Skill Level: intermediate, advanced or combination.

Lunch: Bring your own

Class Description: Enjoy insightful instruction and experimentation while learning the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Using traditional methods, you will learn the basic techniques that are specific to this medium. The instructor will provide step-by-step approaches from beginning to completion of the entire painting process. Subjects painted will mainly be landscapes and some prior experience in drawing and watercolor painting would be helpful.  


Saturday April 21 

Painting Abstracts you will Love with Susan Lackey

Time:  9:30 AM-4:00 PM 
Cost: SASi members $80, Non-members $85 
Materials:  All Supplies Included 
Student Skill Level: All Levels   Ages: 15 and older
Lunch: Bring your own 
Class Description: This workshop is designed to help you make abstract art you feel happy about.  You will use inks, acrylics, various mark making tools to paint on a 16’x16” painting panel. And best of all, you will have fun and learn lots. Creating abstracts can be daunting but not in this workshop.  Susan will guide you through a series of steps in her stress-free process. You will create a textured underpainting and use layering as you paint with different media.  Toward the end of the day, Susan will show you how to self-evaluate your painting. She will demonstrate and help you individually to achieve an expressive work of art that you will love. This is the kind of workshop you can take many times. You will produce different results each time you take it.

New Pottery classes begin January 8 and 9. Renee Matthews and Rhonda Withers will teach hand building and wheel throwing. Classes meet twice a week for ten weeks and are offered daytime and evening. Cost is $160 for SASi Members and $170 for Non-Members. Included in cost: one bag of clay, use of studio tools and firing of class projects. Additional clay may be purchased as needed.


Additional Pottery Class sessions are:

Class Session #2 - April 9 – June 15

Class Session #3 - July 9 – Sept 14

Class Session #4 - Oct 1 – Dec 7 


Pottery Classes are ongoing throughout the year.

About our Classes and Workshops

Southern Arts Society offers a variety of classes and workshops for all skill levels. Please read the listing to know the skill level and age limits for the class. Please read the class description for a list of supplies required for the student to bring. If any materials are provided by the teacher, that will be listed as well.

 Students should wear appropriate clothing for art classes, or bring an apron or smock to wear. Some paints and materials stain and cannot be removed from clothing.  Please bring your own snacks or lunch, unless noted otherwise.  

Canned drinks and water are available at SASI for .50 cents.
